What is the course about?
It is an introduction to poetry and exploration of how the poet shapes our response.
What will we cover?
Following on from Introduction to poetry 1, you will read ,discuss and enjoy a selection of poetry by John Donne
and Shakespeare (the sonnets) in terms of their styles and themes.You will look at the ways poets shape our response through imagery, structure, form, rhyme, rhythm and tone.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand the use of metaphor / simile/ alliteration in poetry.
- Discuss the role of rhyme and rhythm in poetry.
- Read and discuss poetry with more confidence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The level of the course is introductory. No previous knowledge or experience of Literature is necessary. However, learners will, ideally, need the following skills and attributes:
An enthusiasm for reading and discussing a range of texts in large and small groups.
An interest in, and ability to listen to, the responses of other students to the work discussed.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Teacher explanation, group discussion, dvd and recordings.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No, the tutor will supply all materials. You may find it useful to bring a notebook and pen.
