Description

What is the course about?

Following on from the Introduction to Hieroglyphs, this course broadens and deepens your knowledge of Egyptian Hieroglyphs.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Students will learn more about Egyptian Hieroglyphs, focusing mainly on verbs and learning to read more complex sentences.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read a passage from a well known literary Tale from ancient Egypt
- translate longer sentences and texts in hieroglyphs.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for students who have already completed the Introduction to Egyptian Hieroglyphs course, or have completed a similar introductory course of study. You should be able to confidently transliterate and use a dictionary to translate words in Egyptian hieroglyphs, and should understand the basic principles of reading Egyptian (how to identify direction of writing, handling honorific transposition etc). As this course is taught in English, you should be able to follow verbal and written instructions in English and also take part in class and group activities.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will combine students' work with viewing of objects. Students are expected to participate in the
activities and to do some homework/consolidation work at home every week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Resources and handouts will be provided by the tutor. It is not essential, but it may help your learning to purchase a copy of ‘How to Read Egyptian Hieroglyphs’ by Mark Collier and Bill Manley (any edition).

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The tutor will be able to advise you on a progression course. There is a Reading Hieroglyphs class intended to follow on from this course. See our website for details.
