What is the course about?
This course will provide a broader and deeper understanding of Egyptian texts and language. You will study a variety of texts from different genres, and improve your understanding of Egyptian literature, while also learning more about Egyptian grammar and sentence structure along the way.
What will we cover?
You will study texts from the Middle and New Kingdom, from a variety of sources, including literary tales, magical texts, building inscriptions and more.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Transliterate and translate Middle Egyptian with a good degree of fluency
• Provide historical and cultural context to enhance your translation
• Handle new texts with minimal grammar support from the tutor.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is suitable for those who have already completed parts 1 to 3 courses in Hieroglyphs or have an equivalent level of understanding (able to confidently transliterate and translate Middle Egyptian, able to handle all main clause verb forms and constructions with ease). As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The classes are collaborative – each week we will discuss and refine a translation you have worked on individually, to create an improved translation. The tutor will explain new forms and constructions as you encounter them.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
If you do not already have a copy of a Middle Egyptian dictionary such as Bill Petty’s Hieroglyphic Dictionary (ISBN: 1481271652) or R.O. Faulkner’s Concise Dictionary of Middle Egyptian (ISBN: 0900416327) you may wish to obtain one for your own study, however this is not compulsory and vocabulary can be provided. We recommend you purchase the book after the first session of the course, after you’ve had confirmation that the class is suitable for you.
