Suitable if you have studied Arabic for four years or equivalent and have a fairly good command of the Arabic language. Develop you fluency on these courses taught in Arabic, with the emphasis on speaking and listening. You should have studied Arabic for three years or equivalent and have a fairly good command of the Arabic language.

Description

What is the course about?

This course aims to improve your intermediate level competence in all skills so that you can communicate
more effectively and confidently with Arabic speakers.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Professions and job advertisements, famous writers, love and marriage, famous love stories in Arabic literature, the poet: Nizar Qabbani , women’s lives and religion, culture and politics, religion and holy places in the Arab world.

Grammar: consolidation of previously learnt grammar, form of the verbs, plural, verbal noun” Masdar” use of “an”, accusative of the absolute, adjective phrases, the construction of “idafa” phrases, verbal and noun sentences, connectors.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the main ideas of extended speech/long texts and follow the lines of argument provided
the topic is reasonably familiar
- Interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity with Arabic speakers
- Talk about jobs, love, marriage, religion in the Arab world
- Ask for information and talk about jobs, learning and famous writers
- Ask questions in a formal/informal way by using a Levantine accent
- Talk about opinions and give reasons.
- Gain more knowledge about different religions and holy places in the Middle East.
- Describe women’s lives in the Arab world and their role in society.
- Write and read long texts description and advertisements.
- Improve your grammar and understand more complex sentences.
- Express opinions, discuss advantages/disadvantages of various options.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Arabic 3 upper module 1, or studied Arabic for approximately 4 years recently or have developed an equivalent competence in the language.

You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time etc). It would also be useful if you had some knowledge of intermediate grammar terminology.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
