What is the course about?

This near beginner course introduces you to the Arabic language and culture, focusing on practical speaking and listening skills. Essential vocabulary and expressions are taught first, while the Arabic script is gradually introduced over three terms. You will also explore cultural aspects of Arabic-speaking countries. No prior knowledge is required.

What will we cover?

Topics: jobs and place of work, extended members of the family, the house, means of transport, describing places, asking for directions, shopping for food. 

Grammar: definite articles, sun and moon letters, prepositions, hamza, key questions, the case ending (genitive ) regular plurals, adjectives.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • Revision of greetings and basic information about yourself and others (name, nationality, profession, where you live)
  • Ask about meaning of words and other useful phrases
  • Talking about jobs and place of work
  • Means of transport
  • Revision about your closest and extended family
  • Describing people
  • Talking about your house
  • Describing objects and explain where they are
  • Describing places, countries
  • Shopping for food and using numbers
  • Learn some cultural elements from the topics seen in class

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Arabic beginners: module 1, or have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
