Arabic beginners: module 3

What is the course about?

To enable you to converse in basic everyday situations in Arabic and to introduce you to the written forms of the language.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Topics: In the market, shopping items for party and school , materials, describe what you have, colours, eating and drinking, my favourite dish and at the restaurant.

Grammar: dual noun, using numbers (3-10) with nouns, using to have (ind/ li/ma’a) with the possessive ending,
the root of Arabic words, regular and irregular plural, Using demonstrative pronouns and the case ending ( accusative)
Expression using e.g ”to want”,“ to like”, “ to prefer” to eat”, “to drink” and ”to write”.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Review and consolidate the previous learning.
- Converse in Arabic using simple structures
- Use numbers (1-10) with nouns.
- Shopping for a party, school and traditional items.
- Describe what you have e.g I have a car/ brother/ sister.
- Describe different materials .
- Describe the colours of the flags of Arab countries
- Express you feeling e.g hungry/ thirsty / fasting.
- Talk about your favourite dish e.g I like/ I dislike..
- Order in a restaurant.
- Use verbs in the present/past with singular pronouns and negate the verb by using ( la & ma ).
- Read basic sentences and write in Arabic e.g shopping list, restaurant menu, advertisements.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for students who have attended Arabic beginners modules 1 and 2 or who have an equivalent knowledge of the language.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and explanations, as well as read course documents, in English. You will need to be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, using the 24 hour clock, reading timetables). It would also be helpful if you had some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
