This course forms one of a series of workshops which will equip you with the skills needed to communicate confidently and effectively in a range of different Arabic dialects in a variety of situations. You will need to have studied Arabic for at least a year or have an equivalent level and have some knowledge of the alphabet.

Description

What is the course about?

The course will also provide you with the needed cultural awareness and competences that will help you to demonstrate respect and appreciation. It includes high-frequency vocabulary and phrases likely to be heard in different regions where Arabic is spoken. Each week will focus on a different dialect and will be taught by a different tutor each week who speaks the relevant dialect from these countries/ regions:


7th Nov-Egypt
14th Nov-The Levant
21st Nov-The Gulf
28th Nov-Sudan
5th Dec-Morocco.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

Amongst the topics covered will be:

Greetings and simple courtesies
Talking about your family
Making small talk
Going shopping
Asking for directions
At the grocer
A day in my life
Food and drinks.
At the pharmacy
Buying a ticket.
Some commonly used expressions.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Understand the differences between Modern Standard Arabic and the Arabic spoken in different regions and be able to be able to use the dialect words and phrases in conversations.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable if you have studied Arabic for a year or have an equivalent level.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is based on the communicative approach:

- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate

Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.

Micheline Antonian

Micheline Antonian was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt and moved to the UK in the early 1990s. Soon after she worked for 20+ years as the Regional Director, Arab Region, for the largest women's development NGO in the world. She graduated from Westminster University with a Bachelor's degree in Arabic language and holds a TAFL certificate (Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language). Her work and frequent travelling have broadened her understanding of cultural contexts, as well as the evolution of spoken Arabic. She became familiar with a wide range of different dialects and has developed an appreciation of the cultural differences between the west and Arab world. The more she learnt, the more she realised that teaching the Arabic language to adults would help them discover and appreicate the Arab cultural richness and diversity. She is passionate in guiding students to the same excitements and discoveries that she had found! Her teaching focuses on developing speaking and communicative skills, in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, using different classroom activities, while ensuring each and every student accomplishes the goals they set for themselves.
