Art is fundamentally about communicating ideas. If the idea is strong, the work of art is memorable.

This exciting, one day workshop, led by Rod Judkins (artist, tutor and author of ‘The art of Creative thinking’ and ‘Ideas are your only currency’) will explore methods to create ideas and concepts and combine them with the process of making.

Description

What is the course about?

The ability to generate ideas is fundamental to the process of art and essential to the success of artists. This course aims to introduce you to methods that will help you generate ideas. How do artists get ideas? How do they transform ideas into completed work? For many students the way artists generate ideas is a mystery. Learning about the skills and processes involved in producing and developing your own concepts will increase your confidence in making art. On this one day workshop you will learn the secrets of how artists generate ideas. Working quickly, you will learn practical methods to create ideas and focus on experimenting with different approaches. You'll be encouraged to think in a creative way and to experiment with methods for generating themes and concepts.

What will we cover?

There will be illustrated talks that explain an artists method or technique for generating ideas followed by practical exercises where you will be encouraged to try them out and see if they produce interesting results. The exercises are designed to be easily accessible and draw out your individual voice, fire your imagination and go beyond obvious ideas.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- identify methods and techniques for generating ideas
- understand a range of techniques that artists use to create themes and concepts in their work
- recognise some of your own natural abilities for idea generation
- recognise various processes artists use to discover concepts by experimenting with materials
- to discover a point of view or personal perspective to your work.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

I would highly recommend this course for anyone in a creative job to help them in their idea generation, creative confidence and to learn a little art theory. The tutor is very good and encouraging and manages to appreciate art and commercial design without being snobby about either which I find to be very rare among people in both fields.

I enjoyed this course with Rod Judkins very much. He is a well of knowledge and on the day we barely scratched the surface. I felt stretched and left inspired to continue my artistic pursuits. I wish they taught this in graphic design and illustration courses, it would make such a huge difference. Rod prepared the course really well from course content to course materials, feedback and making sure we are challenged. I hope he will teach this in a longer course.
