Make and print a collagraph exploiting texture and colour using readily available and simple materials with a low environmental impact. The handmade matrix is deceptively simple to construct, the printed results often richer and more detailed than expected when run through the press. All welcome.

This course introduces you to new ways of combining printmaking with creative thinking by using multiple printmaking techniques and processes, layering them to produce compositions that can be made into artworks to take away with you.

Photo-plate lithography uses light sensitive aluminium plates as a printing matrix for photographic, text or hand drawn images. This versatile process allows you to collage and overprint these elements to create original works in small editions.

As part of our summer school in visual arts, come and learn some exciting, low tech printmaking techniques to equip you with skills so you can easily make prints at home without the use of specialist equipment.

Have you always wanted to draw landscapes in a sketchbook?



On this course, you’ll learn basic techniques for landscape studies, in two different locations near to the City Lit.

Summer school intensive two weekends in Mokulito printmaking, or wood lithography. This fascinating print process uses plywood as a printing matrix to draw on with inks, sharpies and lithographic crayons and create images that will print as small editions.

Learn how to script, storyboard, shoot, edit and export a short film in this fun and fast paced introduction to film making.

Explore and develop a personal expressive response to life drawing and painting using a variety of techniques working from the life model. Explore mark-making, rich colour and dramatic contrast to explore and experiment with expressive and dynamic drawing and painting techniques, in response to examples of Expressionist artists styles and approaches.

Experiment with polychromatic print onto fabric and paper, exploring the creative potential of Procion dyes and silk screen printing. Processes include mark making, hand painting, resists, stencils and layering. Develop personal designs, textile samples and artwork.

This is a course for students looking to take their first steps into commercial photography. This is a practical workshop-based course that will enable you to work with photographic studio equipment and software appropriate to a commercial photography workflow.

Workshops throw the spotlight onto niche areas of the visual communication field, enabling you to hone higher-level skills and gain deeper insights.



Workshops tend to have a practical focus, with little or no conceptual or contextual elements, although this varies by course.

Year 3 (VM553) is the culmination of the CLFA course and combines practical studio sessions with a professional and externally focussed remit designed to enable you to further refine your creative work and enhance your professional capabilities in the development of an independent artistic practice. The course encourages students to find and pursue external opportunities relevant to their practice such as organising an exhibition or collaborating with external organisations.



Building upon and consolidating the learnings gained in year 1 and 2 of CLFA, or on your experience of practicing and studying to an equivalent level, you will pursue an individual, self-motivated route through year 3. This will be based upon an existing portfolio, defined intentions, and ongoing creative projects. The Year 3 course is designed to support individual development of new artwork that extends an existing creative practice. It will also allow you to enhance this with an understanding of professional activities that might include the process of making funding applications, finding exhibition opportunities, or developing external relationships. You will be able to engage with practicing artist/tutors in group critiques, one-to-one tutorials, seminars, and self-motivated studio production sessions in which you can explore and refine your skills and creative ideas. There will be engagement with ideas and contexts, and professional practice-based sessions that support the development of your creative work so that it can be sustained beyond the duration of the course.
