Our range of part-time, weekend and evening art and design classes are taught by successful artists and practitioners to ensure you get the skills, knowledge and experience you want and deserve. From experimental painting and drawing to contemporary jewellery making, there is sure to be a course for you. Study from 1 day to 2 years, whether you are a complete beginner or a practising artist preparing for an MA. Our courses are designed with you in mind, so you get to spend more time doing what you love.

Courses available both in-person and online

We offer a range of courses allowing you to choose between online and in-person learning. All our courses are live, interactive, and taught by expert tutors. We host exhibitions throughout the year at City Lit Gallery where our students showcase their amazing work.

  1. Watercolour painting: colour and the imagination

    In this session, Hilary Rosen will share her experience as an artist and tutor and work with you to explore colourful watercolour paintings inspired by both still-life and the imagination. There will be simple takeaway tips as well as time for questions.







    Hilary Rosen is a full-time artist and tutor working within the disciplines of painting and printmaking. With over 30 years of experience, she has regulary exhibited works in Hamburg alongside other national and international exhibits.

  2. Looking at artists: the artists palette

    As part of our 'looking at artists' series, this short online course will focus on the Artist's palette in reference to the slow drying nature of oil paint that allows for strategic arrangement, harmonious mixtures and a unity of colour on the canvas. We will look at examples of artists who make successful use of such strategies in their paintings such as Whistler, William Nicholson and the Canadian Group of Seven.

  3. Embroidery as meditation

    In this workshop, we will freehand embroidery together and use this practice as a way of grounding,connecting with each other and slowing down while learning some basic embroidery stitches and gathering in conversation. This session is part of the 2022 Mental Wealth Festival hosted by City Lit and partners.
