What is the course about?
This course is a creative space in which to discuss concepts, design and structure and develop your ideas using the book format. There will be opportunities to explore the relationship between the structure and the concept of the book by looking at a range of artists books and materials and you will support the development of your work by personal research which will be presented to the group at regular intervals. This course has a maximum of 8 learners to ensure that each student is able to have space to explore their ideas and get 1:1 and peer support. Your tutor will respond to individual projects and prepare demonstrations that support these self-set briefs. When you receive your code to join Google classroom, you will be asked to complete a short questionnaire to help your tutor position the course to suit your needs.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
You will explore the creative possibilities of artists’ books through your personal project and through the study of contextual materials and tutor demonstrations. You will also develop skills in both the production and design of a handmade book through experimentation and through sharing experiences during discussion groups. This will enable you to develop your individual skills and creativity and the tools to create more complex and experimental bindings.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Demonstrate an understanding of the book structure in relation to its contents.
• Initiate, develop and produce practical creative work which utilises book making skills
• Engage in supportive critical discussion of your own work and the work of others.
• Plan weekly tasks and evaluate progress in relation to your proposed work.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is an intermediate course and the course outline is based on students having a prior knowledge of basic bookbinding and the production of creative work. Practical and developmental work will be done in your own time between classes. This course is not suitable for beginners.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
• Class discussion and critique, demonstrations, 1:1 tutorials, Use of Google classroom.
• It is expected that you will work on personal projects outside of the class time to develop your work as the course progresses.
• This course will be taught using live sessions using Google Meet and Zoom
• A computer or laptop will be needed, a fully updated google chrome browser works best
or use a phone or tablet, your device will need a microphone, and optionally a camera.
• You will need to login into our Google Classroom before our sessions start as all course materials will be stored here. You will be emailed a joining code nearer the time.
• You will require a good broadband connection as mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle will not provide sufficient bandwidth at times.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
As this course is based on your own proposal, the material costs will depend on what you wish to purchase to complete your own project. These materials will be provided by you, as and when you need to use them. You will need small hand tools that you usually use for book arts projects. Your tutor may suggest materials and tools as the course progresses, but these will be suggestions only.

Sue Doggett is an artist who creates hand-made books and bindings. She gained a first class honours degree in Visual Studies and Art History from Oxford Brookes University in 1985 and an MA in Design from Brighton University in 1998. She received the World Craft Council Award for Contemporary Craft in 1994 and was elected a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 1996. She has lectured and led workshops in book arts in the UK, Europe and the USA and she currently teaches bookbinding and book arts at City Lit. As an exhibiting Fellow of Designer Bookbinders, Sue works to public and private commission including the Man Booker Prize for Fiction and she is the current editor of ‘The New Bookbinder’ journal. Her work is represented in public and private collections in Europe and USA and can be seen at the Hyman Kreitman Research Library, Tate Britain; The Folger Library, Washington DC; Yale University Library, San Francisco Center for the Book, The Bodleian Library, Oxford; The Centre for Fine Print Research, Bristol and Manchester Metropolitan Museum.
