The level 2 award in peer mentoring has been developed for learners who want to be peer mentors, giving support to other individuals to enable them to make changes in their lives. The qualification provides an understanding of the peer mentoring process and the key skills used in peer mentoring. You will learn about peer mentoring with young people, people with mental health issues, addictions, homelessness and those who have experienced challenges in their lives. We welcome applications from those who have lived experience in these areas.

This course will be delivered online. See the ‘What is the course about?’ section in course details for more information.

Description

What is the course about?

This course is about the role of the peer mentor and the skills required to be a peer mentor. You will learn about the aims of a peer mentoring programme, codes of conduct and techniques for mentoring effectively.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

The course is split into two units;
Understanding peer mentoring
Peer mentoring skills.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course you will acquire communication, planning and review skills needed for peer mentoring. You will learn how to reflect on your own practice. You may build confidence to apply for relevant peer mentoring roles.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a level 2 course. You will be required to complete an application form, literacy quiz and informal interview. You do not need to have studied this subject before, but some interest in this area would be beneficial.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

During the course you will take part in and observe group activities, presentations and discussions. You may be asked to carry out research online or in books. As this is a level 2 award you will be required to complete work outside of the class. Your tutor will provide you with feedback on your work and support to improve it if needed.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs to this course. The course is free if you qualify for the concessionary rate. You should bring a pen and paper with you.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

On completion of the course you may decide to apply for one of our other level 2 courses for example, mental health, youth work or information advice and guidance. You could also apply for jobs in mental health, drug and alcohol support, youth centres or homeless charities.
