What is the course about?
This is a practical dance course for beginners and returners to dancing. It will provide a relaxed and fun opportunity to learn some of the popular Ballroom and Latin styles.
What will we cover?
The course will cover basic figures in the Rumba, Samba, and (ballroom) Tango.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Perform some basic figures in the Rumba, Samba, and (Ballroom) Tango with and without a partner
Demonstrate good technique with the emphasis on dancing in time to the music and employing the correct foot positions, footwork, hold, and lead (if leader) or follow (if follower)
Identify and dance a style applicable and appropriate to a variety of music played
Explain and show good dance etiquette.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is aimed at beginners or those learners that need brushing up on their existing dancing skills.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognize rhythms within the two dances
• Work within groups and pairs safely.
• To lead and follow different learners on the course.
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The tutor will demonstrate the steps as leader and follower without and with music and also give verbal instructions on how to dance the steps. You will practice dancing the steps with a partner and then to music. There will be no work outside the class however you will be encouraged to practice the steps at home.
As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No other costs involved but learners are advised to wear loose fitting clothes. Wear dance shoes if you have them, if not bring shoes that are comfortable, secured to your foot at the heel, and non-stick (trainers are not suitable). Bottled water to drink and a pen.
