In Beethoven’s hands the Classical concerto was converted into a heroic genre fit for the Romantic age. Come along and explore this musical transformation! No previous musical knowledge necessary. This course has a scheduled break week: 18th February 2020.

What is the course about?

The course aims to provide students with a greater understanding and appreciation of the concertos by Beethoven.

What will we cover?

The course will focus on certain key concertos by Beethoven, placing them in their appropriate context, historically and musically, and analysing them in terms of their formal, melodic and harmonic content.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Identify the key stages in Beethoven’s life
- Identify the formal, harmonic and melodic characteristics of certain key concertos by Beethoven
- Recognise the value of the concerto in Beethoven’s output.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous knowledge of music is required but you should have an interest in music and be keen to find out more. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions and engage in class discussions in English.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Tutor presentation and explanation, including handouts
Guided listening and watching of audio and audio-visual examples
Class discussion and debate
Listening and reading outside class is encouraged.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please bring a notebook and pen.
You may wish to buy some of the music or books recommended in class.
