According to Ian McEwan “the novella is the perfect form of prose fiction”.  Find out how and why some of the greatest modern writers, from Henry James to Truman Capote, to Tessa Hadley and Colm Toibin, used the form to create work that is concise, resonant, enigmatic and often ground breaking.

    We will read and discuss three classic plays: William Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, John Webster’s The Duchess of Malfi and August Strindberg’s Miss Julie. Focusing closely on structure, language and tone, we will analyse how dramatists across time have explored themes such as sexual politics, class structures, family relationships and revenge. Throughout the course, we will consider the social, cultural and theatrical contexts in which the three classic plays were produced.
