    Zatoichi is directed by Takeshi Kitano, who drew on his background as a comedian, entertainer and established filmmaker to win the Venice Film Festival Silver Lion award for best direction in 2003.

Kitano’s genius turns this narrative into an empowering film that ultimately offers a very Japanese celebration of humanity.
