If you want to have fun keeping fit then look no further. A belly dance class is a great workout and a wonderful way to learn a new skill. It is inspiring and empowering, improving posture, balance and self-esteem, and offers a glamorous way to get fit. This class can be enjoyed by all ages.

What is the course about?

Great for the complete beginner and those with a little experience who want to brush up on their dancing and technique. We will learn the basics in this fun and encouraging class, discover beginners and improvers isolation’s, pops and shimmies.
Our belly dance classses will give you a strong base in muscle isolation and belly dance technique. You will discover muscles you never knew you had, and train them in the way of a belly dancer giving you a brilliant mind-body connection.
Burn serious calories in the drills and techniques section, train your brain whilst learning new isolation’s, and have fun at the same time!

What will we cover?

Foundation: basic posture and stance, arm positions, circular/accented/fast basic movements and modern belly dance elements, turns and steps.
Belly dance movements: We will be covering belly dance essentials of various beginners/improvers isolated hip movements, circles, figure eights, accented hip and chest movements and snake arms. Learn a belly dance choreography to put all of your moves into practice. Performance/ show elements and skills.
Basic rhythms: 4/4 rhythms (Saidi, Maqsoum and Baladi)
Layering and Isolations: upper body layering on lower body movements, isolation of upper/lower body movements Structure of Arabic music: beats, rhythm, melody, solo and orchestral parts.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Perform some of the basic movements and short belly dance choreography confidently
Identify key belly dance muscles and how to isolate them and dance with them
Discover the basic Arabic music and rhythm patterns
Use improved posture, walk with grace and increase self confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners of all ages and no prior experience is needed.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The teacher explains and demonstrates the movements and provides individual help with the execution of the movements. You will work as a group, in pairs or practice individually. No homework is required however we will encourage you to practice privately.


HEALTH CHECK
You may or may not be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Wear comfortable clothes you can move in easily. A loose top with tracksuit bottoms or leggings or a flowing skirt with elasticated waist is ideal (please wear leggings or shorts underneath so you can do the stretches and any floor exercises properly) and bare feet or very soft shoes such as ballet shoes but not trainers.
You should also bring along a scarf to tie around your hips to help you get into the mood! Hip scarves can be purchased from the tutor. We discourage the use of coin belts at this level as they are often too loud, so please do not bring them.

Melissa Pina

Melissa is a belly dance performer and teacher based in London. She is known for her ability to adapt her teaching methods to many different learning styles while making them fun, safe and technically correct. Melissa’s credits include The 5 O’clock Show with Lenny Henry and Sadie Frost, Strictly Come Dancing It Takes 2 (BBC2) and Don’t Tell the Bride (BBC3), and she has been a featured performer at the Asian Music Awards, Zee Cine awards and Nike. She has featured in a hip-hop fitness DVD ‘Hip Hop Body’ and has produced two DVDs of her own. Melissa’s style, radiant performances and dynamic choreography have earned her a positive reputation and an ever-growing following. She has been teaching at City Lit since 2017.
