Description

What is the course about?

We will attempt to recreate, as nearly as possible, the process of ensemble playing using tunes from
our established Big Bands repertoire.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Using this repertoire, students will record their individual parts which will be combined into a recording of the complete arrangement. This way of working facilitates analysis and appreciation of the content of complex arrangements.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Play a part within an ensemble with confidence, having developed your reading and
interpretation of this genre of music.
Rehearse and record yourself effectively at home.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to be able to read, play and interpret music at a minimum standard of grade 5. Preferably you have experience of Big Band playing, and are accustomed to jazz and Latin styles.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is an online activity-based course. You will be sent a copy of your part as a pdf, and where
possible, we will review and rehearse various sections of the arrangement. Then you practise
your part and when ready, record it at the agreed tempo (bpm). Once you have recorded your part
to your satisfaction you submit the recording and the tutor will combine recordings into
a virtual performance of the arrangement. Much of the work will be undertaken
outside of the class time.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a computer with a built-in or external mic, headphones, speakers, and a means of recording yourself playing.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Big Band rehearsals at Keeley Street will resume as soon as the college deems it safe to host ensemble activities.
