What is the course about?
This course will help you see the value and usefulness of algebra particularly in solving everyday problems. You will learn more about how you can use letters when you do not know the exact numbers in a calculation or when these numbers or values can change. You will discover how you can use algebra to solve problems at work such as predicting sales or how much a customer will spend. You will also discover how you are already using algebraic formulations without realising - such as calculating how to throw rubbish in a bin. These various algebraic expressions will help you understand more about maths in general, to think more logically and help you become much quicker and more efficient in solving problems.
We By using letters to represent amounts you will be able to write your problems in the form of equations By manipulating this problem, using the skills taught, you can find the value of those letters and therefore the answer to your problem. When you feel confident that you understand how algebra works, you will move on to more complex uses.
What will we cover?
• identifying the different steps involved in problem-solving
• identifying how and when algebra can help in problem-solving
•identifying how to simplify lengthy word problems into concise algebraic formulas
• solving problems involving addition, subtraction, division and multiplication with algebra and identifying the different steps needed
