You may like to sing Brazilian songs, to yourself or in public, or you may just like listening to songs in Brazilian Portuguese; either way, this course is for you if you would like to improve your Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation while enjoying songs from this beautiful country.
What will we cover?
We will learn or improve our pronunciation of tricky Brazilian Portuguese sounds and phonological features using famous or not so famous songs from Brazil. There will be plenty of oral pronunciation practice, but no pressure to sing!
The tutor will also teach some cultural elements about a song, a style or an artist.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- pronounce Brazilian Portuguese sounds and words more accurately - be more intelligible when speaking or singing in Portuguese - recognise spoken or sung words in Portuguese more easily There may be other outcomes depending on the needs and interests of the group.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
A basic knowledge of Brazilian Portuguese is recommended as this makes it easier to remember examples, however anyone interested in the sound of Brazilian Portuguese can take part.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Unlike our usual Brazilian Portuguese language courses, instructions and explanations will be given in English and the translation of the songs will be provided if necessary. However there will be ample pair and small group pronunciation practice and opportunities to sing whole songs (although there will be no pressure to do so).
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No. Only bring your enthusiasm!
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
This will depend on your level of Portuguese. Please contact languages@citylit.ac.uk for advice.
Being a 'third culture kid', Claudia became interested in languages, travel and culture in her early years. After acquiring a Master’s degree in Communication Sciences and working as an Art Director, Travel Writer and Fine Art Landscape Photographer for some years, her lifelong passion for languages brought her to gain a Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults. As a native speaker of Portuguese and Spanish, she is experienced in delivering tailored language lessons for adults from all different backgrounds and levels. Being a global nomad since birth, different cultural experiences and the understanding that there is more than one way to look at situations, has given Claudia the insight of perceiving the world in different ways simultaneously. “Learning about other cultures and languages is one of the most useful and fulfilling things one can do as it broadens one's horizons in every aspect of life. It opens many doors not only regarding work and business opportunities but also as a way not only to really interact with other cultures but also learn from them. It is one of the best gifts you can give to yourself!”
