What is the course about?
Forearmed with a solid foundation in the bidding of playing of bridge, we must now face the opposition! Consolidate
the use of overcalls and learn how takeout doubles can snatch contracts away from your opponents. Come and
develop your killer instinct at the card table!
What will we cover?
We will focus on learning to compete in a competitive auction and consolidate defensive and declare play. We will
cover when and when not to overcall and how to use and respond to a take-out double. You will be introduced to the
concept of conventions by learning when and how to use Stayman.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• know the basic requirements for a suit overcall and how to differentiate between a simple overcall and a jump
• Explain what is meant by a take-out double and know when to use it
• Respond to your partner’s takeout double
• Bid Stayman and how to respond to a Stayman enquiry.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course follows on from Bridge 1: module 2 and assumes a basic knowledge of bridge including how to bid to a
part-score or game contract, without opposition, in a suit or no trumps. A good understanding of English is
essential. If you wish to speak to the tutor prior to enrolling please contact the Humanities department.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Teaching methods include prepared hands to play; Q & A; quizzes and recapitulation. All handouts will be
provided including worksheets for optional homework practice and if you have access to the internet
recommendations will be made as to downloadable bridge materials.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional costs but you are advised to bring note-taking materials.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may be interested in progressing onto Year 2. The follow-on course, Bridge 2: module 1 - more competitive bidding, will be starting in September 2020.
