What is the course about?

Improving declarer and defensive play in Bridge.

What will we cover?

Responding when opponents overcall our 1NT; extending our use of signals and discards; bidding awkward hands; the losing trick count and simple transfers.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Know how to make suit preference signals
• Know when and how to use the Losing Trick Count
• Bid awkward hands e.g. two long suiter hands and shape
• Learn how to use transfers over opponent’s opening 1NT.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for experienced bridge-players who have completed the equivalent of two and a half years’ bridge tuition in bidding and playing Standard English Acol. If you wish to discuss your suitability for this course, please contact the tutor via the Humanities department.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is very much a ‘hands on’ course where you will be playing cards immediately. In addition, there will be worksheets and quizzes to help consolidate learning. You do not need to do anything outside the class but you will be encouraged to do so.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You need only bring note-taking materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
