A one-off lecture led by the chair of the Naseby Battlefield Trust, Captain Mark Linnell, to explore the military history of the 1645 conflict fought near the village of Naseby in Northamptonshire. We will explore the significance of the battle; battlefield tactics; early modern weaponry; and the key figures involved in the conflict. To what extent is Naseby a turning point in the war in Parliament's favour and to Charles I's disadvantage?
What will we cover?
As above
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
Evaluate battle movements on the day
Identify different weapons used in this conflict
Evaluate the impact of the reorganization of Parliament's New Model Army
Assess the significance of the battle for both the Civil Wars and wider military history
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Introductory. A basic knowledge of the Civil Wars is useful for context but not essential - an interest in the topic is the only real requirement.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Lecture, Q & A, exhibits.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No other costs. Bring a pen and paper if you wish to take notes.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You may wish to join us for a tour of the Naseby battlefield in Term 3 (April/May, details to follow).
