What is the course about?
The course aims to refresh your elementary Latin and improve your pronunciation through the translation of short passages as well as through grammar exercises.
What will we cover?
We will revise the Latin declensions of the nouns/adjectives/pronouns, and the indicative/infinitive/imperative moods of the verbs in the active, deponent and passive forms. Please contact the tutor through the Classics department 10-7 days before the start of the course in order to obtain the material necessary for the first class.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- understand the structure of short passages in Latin and translate them;
- translate simple sentences from English into Latin;
- read Latin with more confidence.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable if you have studied at least 2 years at City Lit or if you have an equivalent level of the language. You need to know the declensions of nouns/adjectives/pronouns, and the following moods of verbs: indicative, imperative and infinitive.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Whole class work. Translating short passages in Latin and doing grammar exercises, tutor posing questions and answering questions raised by the students. Students should – if possible – prepare a Latin passage which will be provided by the tutor before each class. – Homework: about 2 hours per week.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No. The material will be provided by the tutor.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Other Latin classes from September, should you be interested in carrying on studying Latin in more depth.
General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
