What is the course about?

Do you have questions about sentence structure and punctuation in your essays for college or university or in emails at work? Does the thought of grammar put you off the idea of teaching English as a foreign language? Are you a primary school teacher expected to your pupils grammar children when no one ever taught you? Have you had trouble learning a foreign language because you don’t understand the grammar of your own? If so, this course is for you: the aim of this course is help you master the basics of English grammar and become confident in explaining grammar and analysing the grammar of your own writing.

What will we cover?

We will cover world classes (nouns, determiners, adjectives, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions and conjunctions), clause structure (subjects, objects, complements and adverbials), sentence structure (simple, compound and complex sentences) and punctuation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• analyse the grammar of your own sentences
• explain essential grammatical terms
• make informed decisions about punctuation.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for people who don’t know the difference between an adjective and adverb, a subordinating and coordinating conjunction or a modal verb and multi-word verb – or for people who think they do but want to make sure. You won’t be expected to know anything about the grammar of the English language. Note, however, that the main aim of this course is not to help you identify and correct mistakes in your spoken or written English, but instead to help your learn to talk about grammar and analyse sentences (including, very importantly, your own). If you already know a lot of grammatical terminology but want help improving your spoken or written English, please contact us to enable you to choose courses geared more toward accuracy: 020 7492 2511 and/or

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The tutor will present and explain grammar, encourage questions from students during class discussion and prepare activities for you to do in pairs and small groups. You should be prepared to do spend about an hour each week between sessions on homework.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You are strongly advised to buy a grammar reference book before the course beings. The tutor will recommend The Complete Guide to Grammar by Martin Manser and Rosalind Fergusson.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

When you have completed Brush Up Your Grammar, you can join a Grammar Workshop course to do further analysis of your own grammar, or enrol on one of our general English courses (Functional Skills).
