What is the course about?

This course follows the creative process in calligraphy. Starting from script analysis students will study closely Roman capitals and learn arrange text on a page, creating a finished work of calligraphy.

What will we cover?

- Skeleton letters
- Pen made letters
- Roman Capitals
- Variations of a script
- Layout.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Use traditional calligraphy tools
- Write Roman Capitals
- Analyse scripts and create a consistent alphabet
- Introduce variations of Roman capitals in your work
- Design a layout
- Produce a finished calligraphic piece.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods will include visual presentations, individual instruction, group discussion and practical work. It is possible to achieve the aims of the course by working at class only. Practice at home, however, would be desirable.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will need a notebook and a pen. Basic materials and tools will be provided for use during the class, however, you might want to buy your own tools. Your tutor will give you advice on equipment during the course.
