What is the course about?

You will learn how to construct the letterforms and design finished pieces including
illuminated letters using colour and gold leaf.

What will we cover?

An introduction to Italic minuscule and Capitals, using various sizes. The course will also cover the basics of layout
and design, paper trials, illuminated letters with the use of colour and gold leaf. You can study other styles of writing
such as Caroline minuscules or Uncials. If you are more experienced you can work on your own project.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Demonstrate the basics of italic minuscule.
- Develop capitals in various ways.
- Design and produce a finished piece.

For more advanced learners:
- Use other styles of writing such as Caroline minuscules, Uncials, Versals and Copperplate writing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

From complete beginners to intermediate, progressing to advanced levels. The course emphasis is on good
letterforms and innovative design. Each student will be given the confidence to develop at their own pace and
not to feel pressured to produce quantity rather than quality.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and
safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
