Learn how to create calligraphic lettering with a pointed brush to liven up your greetings cards, make posters and more. This introduction to writing with a brush is an ideal entry into the world of calligraphy and creative handwriting.
This course is perfect for all abilities and left and right-handers who have never used a brush pen or calligraphy pen, or those who have just started to dabble in lettering. We’ll begin by laying down a foundation of strokes and develop a strategy for practising time-effectively and mindfully with intention.

What is the course about?

The pointed brush is a great tool for any calligrapher or graphic designer because it can be used to create lettering
on a wide range of hand-lettered projects such as logos, posters, greetings cards, ceramic decorations and fabric designs. You will be taken step-by-step through the techniques required to use a pointed brush and there will be advice about tools and materials. This class is suitable for the complete beginner and those wishing to improve on their calligraphy skills. This online class comes with helpful, downloadable and printable sample and practice sheets.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- Brush lettering warm-up techniques
- Writing different styles with a brush pen
- How to get your creative inspiration for your brush lettering
- How to add embellishments to your brush lettering
- How to design a greeting card.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- write a basic script with a pointed brush
- add flourishes and embellishments
- design and make a simple greeting card.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for the complete beginner.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- Students will work occasionally in groups, and sessions will feature work that can be extended further.
- This course will be taught using live sessions using Zoom
- A computer or laptop will be needed, a fully updated google chrome browser works best or use a phone or tablet, your device will need a microphone, and a camera.
- You will need to login into our Google Classroom before our sessions start as all the helpful, downloadable, printable sample and practice sheets. course materials will be stored here. You will be emailed a joining code nearer the time.
- You will require a good broadband connection as mobile data 3G/4G or a mobile dongle will not provide
sufficient bandwidth at times.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

We recommend students have access to the following resources to support them on the course:
- A Pentel Brush pen and some extra cartridges,
- HB pencil,
- A4 sketchbook
- A4 bleed-proof paper or layout paper
- A4 Cartridge or HP watercolour paper
- Graph paper
- Tracing paper
- Masking tape
- Eraser

Sharon is a London based left-handed calligrapher, lettering artist and illustrator. She studied Calligraphy and Bookbinding at Roehampton University and was awarded a first class honours degree in 2003. In 2010 she became a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. Sharon believes anyone can learn calligraphy if you relax, enjoy the process and allow yourself to make lots and lots and lots of mistakes.
