Time: 10:30 - 16:30
Location: KS - Keeley Street
Sharon Shaw

Learn how to create your own unique style of calligraphic handwriting and be inspired by the work of historical and contemporary calligraphers.

What is the course about?

In this course we will examine the calligraphic handwriting of historical writing masters and contemporary calligraphers as an inspirational starting point for creating handwriting styles of your own.

What will we cover?

We will be writing with gel pens, italic fountain pens and flexible pointed nibs and, for those wanting more of a challenge, there will be an opportunity to try pointed brush pens.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Analyse historical and contemporary manuscripts
- Create different styles of calligraphic handwriting

More advanced students:
- Work on self-directed projects with help and advise from the tutor.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for the complete beginner, left and right handers and those wishing to refresh their calligraphy skills. You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs, health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

During the class there will be group and individual demonstrations. You will be given examples and worksheets which enable you to develop at your own pace. It will be beneficial if you can do some practice between sessions.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No equipment is needed for the first session. However, you will need to purchase an A3 folder for handouts and worksheets. Advice will be given about tools and materials you can purchase to enable practice between sessions or if you go on to further study.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

General information and advice on courses at City Lit is available from the Student Centre and Library on Monday to
Friday from 12:00 – 19:00.
See the course guide for term dates and further details.
