This is a unique 2-day hands-on ceramics masterclass, welcoming learners interested in exploring the making techniques of a renowned and highly regarded maker. Students will gain a rare insight into the thinking and processes behind their tutor’s work with a chance to try out multiple techniques under his guidance.
What will we cover?
Over the two days, Learners will experience creating and decorating clay slabs to make plates, dishes and candlesticks, combining various hand building techniques. You will enjoy multiple demonstrations throughout, including silk screen printing on greenware, marbling, staining and creating agateware, whilst being encouraged to explore mark making using stamps, coloured slips and painting fabrics. Dishes will be left to once fire at City Lit. Learners will also be shown the use of additional firings and surface treatments in Ceramics, how to add layers of decoration using decals and ceramics transfers. Your tutor will demonstrate the use of on-glaze enamels with a chance to try them out.
Your Tutor will chat openly of ways of working to produce vessels and share images of their work and sketchbooks in this special two-day class, you will also have opportunity to talk about your personal practices.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is open to anyone with an appreciation for form and decoration and an enthusiasm and interest to develop their ceramic practices with demonstrations from a highly regarded practitioner.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be ongoing group demonstrations supported by discussions and visual references, learning through making. Learners are welcome to bring in sketchbooks.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Tools are available for use within the department and most materials costs are included. Work left to be fired will be once fired only. Ensure that you bring with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals. There is a charge of £2.75 per 500g for clay before firing, the charge for porcelain is £24.00 per bag/ £12.00 per half bag. You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines.
In the final week you will need to pay for materials that you have used during the course, payments to be made by contactless card reader.

Robert Cooper has been teaching at City Lit since 1990, teaching ceramics on the diploma course, foundation course and portfolio summer courses. Robert has a BA in Interior Design from Kingston upon Thames College and a MA in Ceramics from the RCA, London. He has taught at secondary schools and adult education colleges in London. He has been a University Visiting Lecturer at the RCA, London, at Chelsea Public Art, Farnham, Camberwell Art of College and Hertfordshire College. He has run several workshops in Aberystwyth, Italy Milan 4, Venice Environs, Genoa 3, Umbria Villa Pia and Apulia. His personal practice includes ceramics, painting, printing and collage. In clay pieces he uses printing techniques, silkscreen and textiles. He incorporates found shards from the Thames in his collages. Robert carries out extensive research in ceramic historical and contemporary issues visiting exhibitions and museums. He has work in private collections and in public collections in Europe, America and in Britain. www.robertcooper.net
