Test your limits and gain more confidence in solo dancing as we focus on improving your basic body movements, transitioning fluidly between moves, and improvising. A good knowledge of Charleston/Jazz dance required.

What is the course about?

Continue to explore Charleston as a social dance and its influence on other social dances. Experience more challenging sequences and explore improvisation to provide you with greater confidence with solo and freestyle dancing.

What will we cover?

The course will include: warm-ups, learning new steps, cool down and stretch. The class will focus on more challenging dance sequences and performing a choreographed routine, style and improvisation, musicality, history and origin of the Charleston, Charleston as social and performing dance, and introduction to the Dance Circle and party dances.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Demonstrate learning a new dance style
Perform a Charleston dance routine
Use the Charleston and its influence on other dance styles such as Lindy hop and Hip Hop.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
- follow spoken instructions
- use numbers to recognise musical phrasing within dance
- work in groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

There is no work outside the class. The course will be taught verbally, through demonstration and with the use of music. Some video material may be shown to the group; this will be provided by the teacher.
You may be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear clothing that does not restrict your movement and allows you to adapt to changes in your body temperature. The classes are best undertaken in Jazz shoes or comfortable shoes with non-grip soles. Ttrainers are not recommended.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can remain in Charleston: improvers as long as you wish.

After completing two beginners I was really nervous about the improvers course but needn't have worried. You cover a lot more in the class but the tutor is always approachable if you are struggling. It is fun to get stuck in straight away as you are all familiar with some of the routines but there is always more to learn so you don't get bored.

I have done a few of these courses now, brilliant teacher. Her classes are always fun and she makes sure everyone can keep up in the class and she gives a lot of attention to the correct technique.

If you enjoyed Charleston: beginners, this is the next natural step. This course is more challenging than the first one: we learned more new things, more quickly, in every lesson. At first it seems daunting, but the tutor always breaks it down and makes sure everybody's caught up. By the end of the course we finished a whole complex routine and It. Was. Awesome.
