Childcare: level 1 Award in working with children (offsite)

This is a knowledge-based qualification that builds your basic knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children, aged from birth to five years in a range of settings. You will learn about supporting children’s development, from healthy eating to planning activities and keeping children safe from harm. This course is recommended if you do not already have a level 1 qualification, you have English as an additional language, learning difficulties or you are a parent wishing to develop your parenting skills.

This course is FREE if one of the following applies:

a) You are employed and earn less than £20,572.50 . You need to have lived in the UK or EU for the last 3 years and be a citizen of the UK or a country within the EU. You may also be eligible for this funding in other circumstances. When you come for assessment or enrolment, bring a pay slip dated within 3 months of the course start date, or a current employment contract that shows your gross salary. OR

b) You are either on Jobseekers' Allowance or Employment & Support Allowance (WRAG). Please bring proof of income to your assessment or enrolment. OR

c) You receive other state benefits (including Universal Credit), earn less than £338 a month (individual claims) or £541 a month (household claims) and are doing the course to become employed or move into more sustainable employment.

What is the course about?

An introduction to working in childcare. You will develop a basic knowledge and understanding of the needs of young children and how to support children's development in a range of settings.

What will we cover?

We will cover a range of units at level 1, including:
Growth and development of young children
Supporting children's play
Health and safety for young children
In preparation for level 2 we will also do one unit at level 2 investigating an area of childcare you might like to work in.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course you will be able to:
-plan and prepare activities to encourage children to eat healthily
- respond to potentially hazardous or emergency situations
- work cooperatively with other team members
- list procedures, activities and resources which support equality of opportunity and inclusion
- adapt activities to enable the participation of individual children.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course. You will work towards the NCFE Level 1 Award in Caring for Children

You should already be able to follow verbal and written instructions, express ideas clearly in writing, through writing lists and short pieces of text, and pick out essential information from a variety of texts (including websites and handouts). You should be prepared to discuss ideas in small groups.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Please note this course will be taught offsite.
You will be taught in a group using discussion, presentation, individual tutorial, role-play, quizzes and DVD resources. You will need to complete workbooks for each unit to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All materials are supplied for the course. You should bring a folder for your hand outs and a black pen.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can apply for our level 2 Introduction to Understanding working in children's care and education, or one of our other level 2 courses at the college.
