Enjoy exploring the world of children's book illustration on this intensive practical five day course. Learn techniques in developing ideas and creating exciting images in the context of the current children's book market. Please note, there will be some offsite drawing which will involve walking, standing and/or sitting for long periods. Please bring footwear for comfortable walking and you may wish to bring a portable sketchbook stool.

What is the course about?

You will be introduced to the world of children’s books, character design, story ideas and text and image layout. You will learn how to collect reference material, develop ideas and how to make character sketches and illustrations in response to a given brief. You will be encouraged to experiment with different materials.

What will we cover?

- Character design and development
- The relationship between illustration and text and font suitability
- A range of research and ideas development methods
- Current children's book market overview and how it targets different age ranges
- A range of image making techniques including pen and ink, watercolour, crayon, pencil, charcoal and pastel.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand the main principles of character design and development
- Collect viable drawing and photographic reference material
- Research and develop ideas in response to a given brief
- Analyse font suitability and have a working awareness of the relationship between illustration and text
- Identify target age ranges and their importance in the children's book market
- Recognise appropriate skill training options to further your interest in children's book illustration.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No previous experience is necessary. This course is for anyone with an interest in children’s book illustration. Suitable for complete beginners to illustration and for illustrators who wish to develop skills in children’s book illustration..

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, demonstrations, practical exercises, group and individual assistance. The teaching will focus on guided practical work on individual projects and informal discussions and peer and tutor feedback.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials and equipment are provided. You should bring a sketchbook, pens and pencils for drawing on location. You may wish to bring a portable sketchbook stool for sketching outside on location.
