What is the course about?
You will consolidate your knowledge of grammar and vocabulary and will work towards achieving greater fluency. You will develop your competence in reading Chinese characters and will expand your knowledge of Chinese culture.
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
Chinese situational daily life dialogues at an intermediate level
Related writing, reading, listening and other exercises based on those situations
Consolidation of more complicated grammatical points ( most grammar points are at at HSK level 3 and some at level 4)
Development of vocabulary (most vocabulary is at HSK 3 and 4 levels)
Development of competence in reading Chinese characters
Development of listening comprehension.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
-use some grammatical structures to explain longer Chinese sentences,
-know a greater range of vocabulary related to specific topics
-express yourself with better pronunciation, intonation and fluency
-be able to read a greater number of Chinese characters.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a course at an intermediate level. It is an ideal follow-up for students who have previously completed level 3 upper course at the City Lit ( learning Chinese continuously for at least 5 years at the City Lit) or who have acquired an equivalent knowledge of the language at an intermediate level.
It is essential that you can read Chinese characters and that you have knowledge of grammar terminology.
you will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of numbers for daily activities. It is also essential that you have knowledge of more complex grammar terminology.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is based on the communicative approach:
active student participation
emphasis on speaking and listening skills
pair and group work
role plays
use of realia, pictures and authentic material
use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate.

Based on Discover China Book 2, but please discuss with the tutor at the beginning of the course.
