Chinese (Mandarin): an introduction for beginners at the British Museum

This eight-week course, presented in partnership between the British Museum and City Lit, uses British Museum objects related to ancient China to provide a foundation in Chinese (Mandarin). The course will be held in the Sackler room, Clore Education Centre, at the British Museum.


What is the course about?

Learn the basics of Chinese (Mandarin) and apply them to objects and inscriptions held at the British Museum.

What will we cover?

The foundations of Chinese (Mandarin). Details of the content and of the objects will be provided at the start of the course by the tutor.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Numbers
- Greetings
- Exchange contact (e.g. phone number, email)
- Countries and nationalities
- Date, weekday and dynasty
- Opening and closing time
- Describing objects
- Currency and prices
- Locations of different objects (e.g. floors, room number, etc.)
- Giving directions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable if you are a complete beginner.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will combine classroom work with visits each week to the galleries. The classroom-based activities will follow the traditional approach but will aim at a high level of student interaction with pair and group work. Students are expected to participate in the activities and to do homework every week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Resources and handouts will be provided by the tutor.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

A progression course at the British Museum or at City Lit. The tutor will be able to advise you.
