What is the course about?

‘Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life,’ said Confucius. Finding a job like this is something many people aspire to throughout their lives, however the mistake most people make is to start looking outside of themselves to find clues and solutions, whereas the most revealing answers are to be found on the inside.
This workshop will explain both the internal and the external factors influencing career choice, and what to take into account if you want to find a career that will lead you to happiness and fulfilment in your working life.

What will we cover?

• Factors that influence career choice
• How skills, interests and passions contribute to career choice.
• Values and their link to career happiness and decision making.
• Understanding the elements of your ideal job.
• How opportunities influence career choice.
• Methods to help make a career transition easier.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Attain awareness of the factors that influence career choice.
• Gain insight into how your skills, interests and passions can contribute to career choices.
• Understand how values drive happiness at work and can help you in your career decision making.
• Clarify what you want and need from work.
• Consider how opportunities can make or break career plans.
• Gain knowledge of methods to help you make the transition to a new career easier.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior training, experience or skills are necessary, just the ability to follow simple verbal and written instructions and a willingness to contribute verbally to group discussions and question and answer sessions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This course is very interactive. The learning will take place through sharing ideas, group discussions, question and answer sessions and individual written exercises which will be provided. Work outside of the class may be suggested but is voluntary.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No there are no additional costs. Please have a pen and blank paper handy and if possible some coloured felt tips or coloured pencils too.
The exercises and handouts will be on Google classroom, so it is suggested you print them before the course starts and have them to hand during the course, or if you can’t print them, then have some blank sheets of paper and pen with you to write down your answers to questions.
