Description

What is the course about?

This course is predicated on interdisciplinary practices, and exploring methods that utilise both traditional and contemporary techniques, across print and digital media – with the primary focus on the development of a cross-platform creative practice, and discovering new working processes in pursuit of your creative aims.

What will we cover?

The relationship between printmaking and other forms of technologically-assisted art-making (digital and traditional), in experimental, creative practices; creative use of imaging and layout software (eg: Photoshop, Illustrator or InDesign) and their integration with manual/hand processes; the theoretical relationship and creative potential of combined processes within narrative forms (eg: book, video).

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• use digital software/hardware in conjunction with traditional processes to develop your own creative practices
• command greater technical and creative control over your individual art practice, across a range of processes combining digital and manual processes
• take advantage of a fuller range of possibilities presented a result of your creative exploration of technologies and media, both new and old.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

To apply for this course please email visualarts@citylit.ac.uk with a brief statement (not more than 300 words) stating why it would be the right course for you based on your interests, your current practice and your experience. Please include images of your work (no more than 5) you will receive a reply and if you have been succesful your name will be authorised to enable enrolment. As this is an advanced course, students will be expected to be experienced in at least one of the main printmaking processes (or digital printing), and to be conversant with digital imaging or design software (vector- or pixel-based imaging; page layout).
Skills in the following areas may also be advantageous, but are not essential: photography; digital video editing; 3D modelling/animation; book/page layout software.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught a combination of theoretical and practical skills in the City Lit digital lab and the print studio. The course will consist of technical demonstrations, practical work, lectures and presentations, group discussion and tutor/peer feedback. There will be recommended visits to galleries/exhibitions in London, and recommended viewing/online research, in your own time.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

If your work involves photography, you will need to use your own camera or phone (as appropriate). You may wish to work on your own laptop/tablet and software, for the digitally-focused components of the course. If your finished work involves materials other than screen or paper-based forms, you may need to source materials for yourself, through advice/guidance from course tutors.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Suitable progression routes from this course include other advanced City Lit courses: City Lit Fine Art; Developing Art Practice; Artist’s Moving Image Practice: Personal Project; Contemporary Practice: Personal Project.
