Attending one full day a week, you will develop new skills trialling different techniques to further your ceramic knowledge, helping to develop your practice. Focus will be on exploration and the development of personal ideas to produce a body of finished Ceramic work and knowledge which could lead onto further study. Some materials are included.

What is the course about?

This intermediate level course involves in depth tuition of various ceramics techniques and study of ceramic materials. It focuses on exploration, learning through making and following practical demonstrations, you will be encouraged to develop personal ideas in clay enabling you to create a diverse body of 3D ceramic work.

What will we cover?

During this course you will experience a wide range of making and decorating techniques designed to stretch and push your current skill level, with frequent practical demonstrations linked to your personal areas of interests. Gaining confidence and knowledge, you will be supported in developing your own projects, incorporating hand-building, throwing, surface and texture making, basic mould making, firing processes and some glaze research.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Design and make work which fulfils a personal approach to the given projects
- Practise and improve your skills in making ceramic forms.
- Use skills and techniques relevant to all the making processes
- Work with clay and glaze confidently and creatively
- Understand the decorative and finishing aspects of glazes
-Work with an increased awareness of studio ceramics and a better understanding of techniques
- Set further goals in discussion with the tutor
- Be aware of and work to health and safety guidelines of the ceramic studio
-Be able to use and keep a working sketchbook.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is not suitable for beginners, some previous knowledge of ceramics is necessary before applying, supporting sketchbooks are essential.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will need to be able to read a range of written materials and write short pieces of text. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

In class you will be taught by demonstrations, group discussions with informal critiques, one to one tuition, visual information, handouts and slide shows. Working at home with visual research and ideas is optional but is encouraged to aid progression.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Most ceramic materials are covered by the course fee. There is a charge of £24.00 per bag/ £12.00 per half bag for Porcelain. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. Ensure that you bring with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals. You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines. You should also be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

This course is seen as a pathway to other advanced ceramic courses.

Within City Lit you could progress onto the Diploma Course in Ceramics -VR712 which is a structured course that can lead to higher education or independent studio practice. VR704 Ceramic Mentoring Programme.

Robert Cooper

Robert Cooper has been teaching at City Lit since 1990, teaching ceramics on the diploma course, foundation course and portfolio summer courses. Robert has a BA in Interior Design from Kingston upon Thames College and a MA in Ceramics from the RCA, London. He has taught at secondary schools and adult education colleges in London. He has been a University Visiting Lecturer at the RCA, London, at Chelsea Public Art, Farnham, Camberwell Art of College and Hertfordshire College. He has run several workshops in Aberystwyth, Italy Milan 4, Venice Environs, Genoa 3, Umbria Villa Pia and Apulia. His personal practice includes ceramics, painting, printing and collage. In clay pieces he uses printing techniques, silkscreen and textiles. He incorporates found shards from the Thames in his collages. Robert carries out extensive research in ceramic historical and contemporary issues visiting exhibitions and museums.
