What is the course about?

This is a creative dance and performance course designed for people aged 60 and over who have some experience of dance as a form of physical expression within a theoretical context. In a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere, you’ll develop:
• Physical strength, mobility, and coordination
• Musicality and rhythm
• Confidence in movement and self-expression
Classes combine structured exercises with creative tasks to stimulate both body and mind. You’ll explore a wide range of movement styles, using dance as a tool for creativity and communication.
A key focus of the course is performance. Throughout the term, you’ll work collaboratively to create original choreography, with the opportunity to share your work in an informal performance setting.

What will we cover?

Each session will typically include:
• Gentle warm-ups (mobility, strength, balance, and stretching)
• Set dance phrases and sequences
• Creative explorations (solo, partner, and group work)
• Improvisation and choreographic tasks
You will gradually build skills and confidence, working towards a shared performance that reflects your creative journey as a group.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

By the end of the course, you can expect to:
• Move with greater ease, confidence, and freedom
• Improve flexibility, coordination, balance, and stamina
• Develop a stronger connection with your body
• Gain a deeper understanding of rhythm and musicality
• Explore a variety of dance styles and creative approaches
• Perform in a supportive environment with increased confidence
• Build meaningful social connections and friendships

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is open to everyone aged 60+, who have some previous experience of dance or anyone that has the ability to be part of a dynamic elders dance ensemble.

We recommend our Dance 60+ Performance course as a starting point. This provides opportunity for students to experience the dance style and to work with the choreographer. Following successful completion on the Dance 60+ Performance course students are then invited to join the City Lit Elders Dance Company if suitable.

Please click on Start Your Interview to apply; the Drama, Dance & Speech department will contact you to progress your application. If your application is successful, you then pay the fee and enrol.

To get the most from the course, you should feel comfortable:
• Following verbal instructions
• Moving at your own pace within a group setting
• Working safely with others in pairs or small groups

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Sessions are taught in a supportive, group-based environment using:

• Demonstration and guided instruction
• Creative exploration and improvisation
• Group discussion and reflection
• Tutor led movement work and technique sessions

You will receive regular feedback and have opportunities to reflect on your progress. The course encourages you to take ownership of your learning while being guided every step of the way. There may be light practice suggestions between sessions, but no formal homework is required.

Health & Wellbeing Check
Activities can vary in intensity. You are encouraged to work at your own pace and listen to your body at all times. If you have any health concerns, please consult a medical professional before attending.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

• Bottled water
• Comfortable clothing you can move in
• Bare feet or anti-slip socks (unless otherwise discussed)
• Hair tied back if long (recommended for comfort and safety)

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

As a member of the City Lit Elders Dance Company, you can reapply.
