What is the course about?
This is an opportunity to learn how graphic design informs the way we see the world and how you can begin to communicate your ideas to say what you want in a visual and stimulating way. As well refining your skills and developing new approaches you will gain confidence as a designer through topics; typography, interactive gifsAt the end of the course you will be invited to showcase selected work in a group exhibition in Citylit’s gallery space.
In our fully equipped studio you will have access to the latest professional Adobe software; Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop. Where you will be taught new skills to boost your digital knowledge. There will be emphasis on evaluating, discussing and showcasing work in group presentations.
What will we cover?
- Typography / typographic design
- Digital interactive media / GIF’s and social media
- Critically evaluating design work
- Development of digital skills using Adobe; InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Preparation to build a portfolio of design ideas.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate an awareness of effective visual communication
- Identify the fundamentals in typography
- Demonstrate good knowledge of Adobe; InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
- Critically evaluate personnel design work and the work of others
- Create body of design work for portfolio.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
City Lit Graphic Design Part 3 is perfect for those who have completed Part 2 and for those wishing to develop creative skills and knowledge further in visual communication. You will need to have a good knowledge of Adobe software; Illustrator, InDesign and Photoshop.
We use Apple Mac computers in our digital studio, which you will be inducted and guided through as part of the course.
Students should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You will be invited to take part in group discussions and you should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is taught by a team of experienced practicing designers through; engaging workshops, creative exercises, design briefs, tutor demonstrations, illustrated talks and individual / group tutorials. Each Part of the City Lit Graphic Design course requires a high level of commitment, therefore working independently outside the studio is strongly encouraged.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Students will need an A4 or A5 size sketchbook for recording information and ideas. We also advise students to have an A3 size plastic folder/portfolio with clear pockets to assemble a portfolio of work. Plus a memory stick or a mac formatted external hard-drive to store and save digital working files.
