What is the course about?

This intermediate/advanced level course is designed to allow you to work on your own projects; be it fine binding, box-making, book conservation or alternative book structures.

What will we cover?

Your own projects, such as: modern conservation binding structures, contemporary fine binding in leather, book repair and conservation, box making and alternative book structures.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Select and use appropriate materials
- Work confidently and independently on your own projects
- Assess your own work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course Is for intermediate and advanced levels. It is not suitable for beginners.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration, group and individual tuition. You may wish to practise and experiment at home.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

You will have to bring your own small hand tools, and you will have to pay for certain materials that you use; some are available for purchase in the class. You may occasionally have to get, for example, leather or specific paper or tools and you will be given advice on this.If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, City Lit students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may like to further your learning with a course on gold tooling or leather techniques or by enrolling on a City Lit bookbinding masterclasses. There is also VD413 Book Club where you can work on individual projects supported by a tutor in a workshop situation. Your tutor will be able to advise you during this course.
