What is the course about?
Delivered through a wide range of projects that explore mark-making, collage, printmaking and three dimensional work, the course offers great scope for self-expression and an opportunity to embed a range of cross-disciplinary creative practices.
Structured through a set of thematic projects, the course stems from a focus on drawing and mixed media approaches. You will create work using different expressive materials and techniques experimenting with materials that will allow for new ideas to develop.
You will explore a diverse approach to drawing that will broaden the ideas and imagery produced and instigate creative ideas by responding to a select series of themes, understanding the importance and role of research when personal ideas are being explored. You will be introduced to a number of artists’ works as reference to techniques and contexts that are relevant to each project.
What will we cover?
- Mark -making, drawing in both two and three dimensional contexts
- Life and observational drawing
- Texture and colour
- Sculptural constructions including paper manipulation, book construction and assemblage work.
- How to develop personal visual stories.
- Mono-printing
- Research methodologies with reference to contemporary art practices.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate confidence in experimenting with and using different materials and media
- Identify the importance of using relevant materials and techniques for greater self expression
- Demonstrate drawing skills using a variety of techniques
- Take part in group critiques, demonstrating studentship to providing and receiving critical and constructive feedback
- Reflect on personal experiences to be able to develop relevant, personal work
- Demonstrate a knowledge of the works of historical and contemporary artists
- Produce a diverse portfolio of 2D and 3D work to support progression.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is ideal for students who have some experience in drawing or painting and wish to build a portfolio of mixed media work. This course supports students in the production of a rich portfolio, ideal for preparing you for a Foundation Diploma level study or equivalent further education in art and design.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is led by a practising and experienced mixed-media artist, structured through a series of diverse creative projects that are introduced weekly. Each project is supported by visual presentations, practical demonstrations and in-depth conversations. Each project will end with a informal presentation, where you will receive peer and tutor feedback.
The City Lit mixed media and drawing projects course requires a level of commitment, and therefore independent study outside the studio is recommended and encouraged. You will also have access to Google classroom as our designated Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) where you will be access hand-outs, briefs and collaborate with peers outside of course hours.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Basic studio material and resources are supplied as part of the course. We advise that students have an A5/A4 sketchbook to record notes, ideas in. Your tutors will advise you ahead of each session should any additional material be required as part of a project.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Upon completion of the City Lit mixed media and drawing projects course, you would be in a good position to apply to the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design, or progress onto a specialised course within the centre for Advanced Practice. Ruth Studied Ceramics at Harrow College of Art, and MA Printmaking at Camberwell College of Art. From 1978 Ruth began as Art College lecturer, where she discovered her great love of teaching. In 1982 she began teaching regularly at Camberwell College of Art, on the Foundation and Degree Courses, and in 2002 she moved to City Lit, where she has been teaching regularly on Ceramic and Mixed Media Courses. Inspired by the expressive qualities of different mediums and techniques, Ruth’s work has moved from hand-built clay forms, to mixed-media sculptures, sewing, collage and drawing. Looking at personal experiences for inspiration, Ruth has been making sculptures inspired by her family history and professions. Ruth’s teaching aims to ignite students’ own personal expression, through diverse set projects, expressive materials used, and techniques taught. On-going encouragement of students’ strengths, enables confidence and self belief to develop. Ruth has exhibited extensively, and has her work in several Art Collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, and The Crafts Council, London.
