What is the course about?
The course aims to help you develop a good clarinet technique. You will learn the art of ensemble playing, improve
your reading skills and explore a range of musical styles. You will also learn more about improvisation.
What will we cover?
The course covers more advanced aspects of clarinet technique at around Grade 3 standard
- Breathing, articulation, fingering, tone etc.
- Music notation, including more complex rhythmic patterns
- Grade 3 standard repertoire
- Individual repertoire as advised by the tutor.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate all aspects of clarinet technique at an elementary level
- Sight-read music at a basic level
- Develop greater confidence in simple improvisation
- Play in an ensemble.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have had at least one year's playing experience and should be at ease with note-reading to around Grade 2 / 3 standard and some very simple improvisation.
You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Classes are taught through tutor explanation and demonstration, group and individual playing. Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study.
A regular practise routine is essential to make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class (ideally at least 20 minutes 4 times per week).
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring your own Bb clarinet, supply of reeds, and a pencil.
Required text Jonathan Rutland, Abracadabra Clarinet 3rd ed. [c.£10 incl CD]. This book is used throughout Clarinet level 2 courses. Your tutor recommends that you buy the version with the CD as this will be of most use to you.
We will also use 40 Modern Studies for Solo Clarinet by James Rae and repertoire from Easy Clarinet Duets by James Rae.
The tutor will provide other musical material. If there are specific pieces you would like to learn, please feel free to suggest them to the tutor.
