Develop and consolidate your clarinet playing further in this course. Your tutor will guide you through technical and theoretical clarinet studies as well as introduce you to solo playing and musical interpretation. A range of genres will be covered from early music to classical to Jazz and popular styles, in a mix of solo, duet and ensemble arrangements. For students who have at least two years of playing experience.
What will we cover?
The course covers more advanced aspects of clarinet technique up to around Grade 3/4 standard - Breathing, articulation, fingering, tone etc. - Music notation, including more complex rhythmic patterns - Playing Grade 3/4 standard repertoire - Ensemble playing in 3 or 4 parts
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Demonstrate key aspects of clarinet technique at a more advanced level - Sight-read music at a more advanced level - Play in an ensemble.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have had at least two year's playing experience and should be at ease with note-reading at Grade 3 standard and some simple improvisation. You will need to be able to play all notes up to top C. You will need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and engage in class discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Classes will comprise tutor explanation and demonstration, group playing along with the tutor and individual playing. Sessions will also include class discussion, aural skills and theoretical study. To make progress you will need to practise regularly outside class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please bring your own Bb clarinet, supply of reeds, and a pencil. You may be asked to buy a recommended music-book by your tutor (approx price £15).The tutor will provide other musical material.

George is a freelance clarinet and bass clarinet player and teacher. Having graduated with Distinction from the Royal Academy of Music (MA, 2010), George regularly plays in Brandenburg Sinfonia in London with players from the top London orchestras. He is a member of Kidenza Orchestra, performing classical orchestral music to thousands of young audience members every year. George has given many premieres, including pieces for the LSO's Soundhub scheme and in various national festivals. He has recorded widely, including at Abbey Road Studios. George has released two albums with his group iyatraQuartet, to critical acclaim. They were awarded the Kennedy Award 2019 by violinist Nigel Kennedy. George has led music workshops for Music for Autism, Aldeburgh Participate! and Bristol Pre-Conservatoire, and performed several operas for Royal Opera House Education and Outreach. He also conducts Surbiton Royal British Legion Marching Band and Palace Band in Alexandra Palace and at Benslow Music.
