What is the course about?

What makes an international film star? Who creates it and what for? These are the underlying questions behind reading the images of film stars in their home country and abroad. This course examines the working careers of ten Italian actors who also exemplified the notion of screen stardom.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.

What will we cover?

Looking at the careers of Anna Magnani, Giulietta Masina, Toto, Alberto Sordi, Sophia Loren, Marcello Mastroianni, Monica Vitti, Claudia Cardinale, Monica Bellucci and Toni Servillo, each week we will focus on two of these great names of Italian cinema, their cultural and historical context in relation to the art achieved.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

-Have a better understanding of the background and the context of these diverse Italian actors.
-Further develop skills of analysis and interpretation to your own wider film knowledge.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory level course aimed at building Italian cinema appreciation skills but it is also suitable for all who enjoying viewing and discussing film.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Screenings of extracts from the actors’ films, along with discussing film analysis in small and large groups.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

A pen and a notebook. The tutor will provide material for further study and research.
