What is the course about?
You will explore a range of mixed media drawing materials and experiment with mono print, collage and the use of imitation gold leaf and coloured ink. Develop a personal sketchbook as a visual research resource, build simple models of spaces to use as inspiration for your drawings. A short introduction to colour theory is included. Every session will begin with an introduction to a specific method. The starting theme of the course will be ‘people in the city’.

- Exploring mixed media materials to develop drawings

- Gaining pigments from unusual sources
- Using a wide range of drawing tools
- Embedding texture in drawing
- Colour theory, introductory level
- Building simple models of spaces, using those as inspiration for your drawings.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Use colour and tone in drawing more confidently
- Use mixed media materials to support your drawings
- Develop ideas from initial sourcing in your sketchbook
- Respond to a given theme
- Build a simple maquette to support idea development; to inspire a drawing or painting; to present an idea.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This short course is introductory level , however, it is suitable for people of all levels of experience who enjoy experimenting with drawing approaches, techniques and ideas.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information and will be invited to take part in group discussions. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Through demonstrations, practical activities, some visual research, talks/presentations, group discussions, individual tuition and feedback. You will be encouraged to research and record ideas outside of sessions and to use your sketchbook in class.
The course will include one half day off site.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Basic materials are included in the course fee. You should bring an A4 hard-back sketchbook or sketchpad.

Ute works in sculpture, drawing, photography and print. She exhibits in the UK and abroad, including shows in Janus Avivson- Paris, Gallery Unwahr- Berlin, The Watermans Art Centre, National Trust, The Round Chapel- London, St Pancras Chambers and studio1.1.london. She is interested in 'Art and Landscape' and has collaborated with other artists in this area. Residencies and public art include ‘SelfScapes’ in Dalby Forest, an artistic research project with catalyst funding from York St John University; Hurlingham and Chelsea School - ACAVA;Winton School- The Esmée Fairbairn Charitable Trust. Publications: Kate Wilson, Drawing and Painting Materials and Techniques, 2015; The E list,Winter.No 55. Work reviews include: Time Out by Martin Herbert; Catalogue Essay by Tom Mc Carthy. Ute worked as Trustee member of Shoreditch Town Hall Trust and as gallery curator, Tram Depot Gallery. Ute has over 10 years of experience teaching in Further and Adult Education, on the Art and Design Foundation Diploma; Developing Art Practice; EDAM and The City Lit interior design course, specialising in sculpture - 3D, drawing and colour. Qualifications: MAFA and PGCE
