What is the course about?
An introduction to colour theory and how to apply it in practice. To investigate the components of colour and improve your skills in mixing, applying, comparing and organizing colour using paint, paper, collage and/or pastels.
What will we cover?
• Colour theory and the science of seeing
• The components of colour, Hue, Saturation and Value
• The interaction of colour including:-
the seminal work of Josef Albers and Johannes Itten
• Relate colour theory to your practice as an artist
• Mixing colour using paint and pastels and paper collage
• Developing skills in mixing and organizing observed and abstract colour.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Explain colour theory and the science of seeing
• Relate colour theory to practice as an artist or maker
• Improve skill in mixing, organizing and applying paint
• Develop a painted colour swatch chart for future reference
• Present a small painting, pastel study based on observed colour mixing.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Suitable for all levels of artists and makers who want to develop their knowledge and apply colour theory to their work. Some previous experience of drawing/painting/designing would be an advantage.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Presentation and discussion of theories
Colour mixing exercises
Individual tuition and feedback, dependent on each student's level
Group discussions and critiques
Some homework + preparation.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
An A4 sketchbook, Acrylic or oil paints –primary colours + white, old magazines, (pastels or colour pencils if you have them).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Painting 1, 2, Printmaking, Textiles, mixed media courses.
