What is the course about?

In this fun course, you are encouraged to appreciate comedy words and constructs to enhance your comedy
writing. You will be introduced to classic comedy sketches and how they work. You will work together in group
exercises and learn about giving positive feedback.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

• how to identify comedy words.
• how to identify comedy words.
• recognise joke & sketch structure.
• analysis of classic sketches & monologues
• generate new ideas for comedy.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Complete beginners or anyone wishing to further enhance existing skills. This course will help you develop your work and enhance your comedy skills, and you will meet fellow comedy enthusiasts to collaborate with and gain feedback and inspiration. You will need to be able to:
• Speak English fluently and clearly
• read a script accurately
• give and receive constructive feedback
• take notes.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

We will study and discuss comedy clips. In the session there will be a mix of writing exercises, and
interactive work. You will be asked to do some writing as homework. As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Alan Nixon is one of Britain’s top independent media professionals. His recent productions include directing the award-winning R4 sitcom Reluctant Persuaders. He has been Creative Consultant to broadcasters and renowned independents, including Aardman Animations (Wallace & Gromit), Grant Naylor (Red Dwarf), and Absolutely Productions (Armstrong & Miller / Trigger Happy TV). He was one of the founding controllers of Channel Five, has worked with Alexei Sayle, Victoria Wood, Caroline Aherne and Simon Day, and teaches courses at the BFI, the National Television and Film School, and the London School of Film, Media and Performance.
