Course Dates: 08/04/20
Time: 10:00 - 17:00
Location: KS - Keeley Street

Ever struggle to send your videos out to family and friends? This quick one-day course introduces the basics of video compression: using the software effectively and judging appropriate formats to use. An essential course to make sharing your films as painless as possible.

What is the course about?

This course gives you a basic understanding of what compression is and how it works. It will help you to make informed choices about which compression type best meets your needs. You will be introduced to various compression formats, and the media compression and encoding application Compressor. You will gain an essential understanding of how to compress your work differently for different needs including the internet, mobile devices and DVD.

What will we cover?

- How to use Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro X to output your footage as a good quality movie file
- How to use third-party compression software to handle footage
- How to import footage into a compressor
- How to select an appropriate codec for your destination
- How to output footage to the web and DVD.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- choose a setting in Premiere Pro or Final Cut Pro X to output your footage as a master movie file
- import footage into a compressor
- select an appropriate codec for your destination
- customise a codec setting for your own needs
- output footage to the web and DVD.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You do not need to have any experience of using the Compressor application, but you need some basic knowledge of Final Cut or Premiere Pro software, and some previous experience of importing footage into your computer.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussion. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching is through demonstrations followed by hands-on exercises, allowing for some individual tutorial support. There maybe some forum sessions and there will be group discussions. Handbooks, manuals and worksheets are available. Please note we will be working on Apple Mac computers.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Our high definition cameras and the latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course. It would be useful to bring a memory stick (or portable hard drive – please note PC-formatted hard drives can be read by Apple Mac computers, but not written to). CDs/DVDs are available.

If you would like to buy art materials for your personal use outside of the course, City Lit students receive 10% discount off everything* from Cass Art, the UK's leading art supplies retailer. Your tutor will advise you on what you should buy. You will need to show your enrolment receipt in-store to receive your discount. A what you need to know, should know, but never knew about compression (and were afraid to ask as its way too hard). This day can change the videos you put out into the world. Insights into producing the best you can in today's demanding bit rate world. Found it very helpful. The tutor is an editing genius. A technological and creative expert. This course should cost a lot more for what it offers.
