What is the course about?

The Bangladesh War of Independence of 1971 was the culmination of decades of struggle for self-determination/autonomy along with demand for political and cultural rights. Lack of adequate political representation, economic under-development and deep-seated cultural grievances were important causes. The course aims to look at diverse aspects ranging from the crucial language movement asserting Bengali identity to the landmark general elections of 1970; from the role played by key regional and international players to the impact of the war of 1971 on the lives of ordinary citizens. Displacement of millions/refugee crisis accompanied by trauma, the important events in the 1971 war, the birth of a new nation with its associated challenges and the shift in geo-politics of the region will be covered in the course.

  • Reflect on issues of cultural identity, trauma, collective memory and justice
  • Discern the crucial role of Bangladesh in the region 

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is at an introductory level and is suitable for those new to the subject as well as those who have some familiarity with the topics to be covered. A good grasp of English to keep up with the course and participate fully is necessary. As with most of our history and politics courses, an open mind and a willingness to listen to and think about views with which you do not always agree are more important than specific levels of skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will be taught in location with each session of two hours each. All sessions will include lectures, PowerPoint presentations and class room discussions.
